Investment Lessons from Fishing: Building Portfolios FROM Single-Country Equity Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

7/31/2017

This paper describes three major existing methods of investing in international equity markets. They include bottom-up stock picking, “hybrid” stock picking, and investing in funds or Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that closely follow broad-based international indices. The paper also describes the fourth, alternative, method of international equity investing, namely, construction of portfolios from single-country equity ETFs that was developed at Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, LLC. It explains the firm’s reasoning for developing this new method. The paper proceeds to compare selection of different ships for fishing with investment portfolios built using the four methods above. The paper describes groups of countries that each investment method is more appropriate for. Finally, it talks about competitive advantages of building portfolios from single-country ETFs versus the three major established methods in such areas as potential reduction of risk of capital loss, flexibility of investment selection, speed of entering & exiting investment positions, and investment management fees.

BOSTON, MA – 07/11/17 – Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, LLC (BBIS) announced today that Vitaly Veksler, the firm’s CEO and Portfolio Manager, presented at Emerging Markets: Investment Theories and Practice class at Harvard University on July 9. It was Vitaly’s third time as an invited speaker at the class. He talked about BBIS’ country selection and rotation strategy used for investing in equity markets of emerging and frontier markets, as well as developed countries. Among other topics, Vitaly shared with students his firm’s overview, demonstrated key elements of the firm’s investment process, commented on the process’ competitive advantages, and investment strategy’s performance over the firm’s three and a half years of existence.

Vitaly said, “It was a pleasure to be invited as a guest speaker by Peter Marber, a long-time investor in and analyst of emerging markets. Most recently, he served as the Head of Emerging Markets Investments at Loomis, Sayles & Company, one of the most prominent Boston-based investment companies. Peter has also authored or co-authored five books on emerging markets in addition to his investment work. It is a compliment and an honor when a professional of Peter Marber’s caliber and vision selects your firm’s investment strategy from hundreds of strategies offered by much larger and better-known firms as a differentiated one that he would like to be presented to his students at one of the best universities in the world.

It was great to present to a knowledgeable audience with deep interest in emerging markets. The students asked me thoughtful questions about BBIS’ investment strategy during and after the presentation. I look forward to continuing dialogue with a number of them in the future.”

Beyond Borders Investment Strategies' PORTFOLIO Manager spoke at Harvard University

BOSTON, MA – 10/26/16 – Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, LLC (BBIS) announced that Vitaly Veksler, the firm’s CEO and Portfolio Manager, presented at Emerging Markets: Investment Theory and Practice class at Harvard University on October 23.  He talked about BBIS’ country selection and rotation strategy in the context of investing in these countries’ equity markets. Vitaly shared with students his firm’s overview, talked about reasons for the firm’s existence, demonstrated key elements of the firm’s investment process, gave examples of macro trend analysis (i.e. China’s commodity demand) and individual country trade analyses, and commented on the firm’s competitive advantages.  Vitaly also presented at this class last year.

Vitaly said, “It was a pleasure to share my thoughts on my firm’s country selection and rotation strategy at a class taught by such a maestro of emerging market investing as Peter Marber, Head of Emerging Markets Investments at Loomis, Sayles & Co. Peter is one of the rare investment management professionals who clearly gets the “big picture” of investing in emerging markets. He sees links between developments in emerging market economies and different asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities. He also sees impact of developments in one asset class on the other classes. As a true “renaissance” man, Peter has authored or co-authored five books on emerging markets in addition to his investment work.

As an entrepreneur, whose firm invests using a strategy that almost nobody around the world does, I was thrilled to be invited to the class that concentrates on analyzing links between investment theory and practice in my area of expertise, i.e. international and emerging market investing. To be invited by such a distinguished professional as Peter Marber made my visit even more special.

I enjoyed answering multiple questions from the students in this class. These questions demonstrated that people asking them had strong knowledge of investing in emerging markets and deep interest in learning more about innovative strategies of investing there.”

Beyond Borders Investment Strategies' CEO SPOKE AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY’S EMERGING MARKET CONFERENCE in New YorK

10/18/2016

BOSTON, MA – 10/18/16 – Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, LLC announced that Vitaly Veksler, the firm’s CEO and Portfolio Manager, participated in Cornell University’s 6th Annual Emerging Markets Conference in New York last Friday, October 14.  The conference was organized by The Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.

Vitaly Veksler said, “It was a pleasure to share my thoughts on countries to invest in during a panel titled Looking at Investment Opportunities in Emerging Markets.  I also enjoyed listening to other presenters about their “war stories” of investing in emerging markets.  It was great to share with the conference attendees and organizers a “war story” that I observed at a company where I worked before.  It involved an investment in Yukos, one of the best-run and the most transparent Russian oil company in the early 2000s.  The company was widely believed to be bankrupted due to the conflict between the company’s CEO and Russian authorities.

This experience made me question the wisdom of investing in individual stocks in emerging markets, at least as it relates to the funds that I manage.  No matter how diligent investors in these countries are, they may not have full information about political, regulatory, taxation and other issues related to these companies.  I thought a lot about the Yukos story and concluded that if I were to start a firm that would invest in emerging markets, I would rather use equity country funds than equities of individual companies as building blocks for the firm’s investment portfolios.  An equity country fund’s price would not go down to zero if one company in the fund went bankrupt.

I founded Beyond Borders Investment Strategies more than a decade after the Yukos collapse, when single-country exchange traded funds (ETFs) that follow performance of stock markets in almost 50 countries, became available.  I concluded my presentation at the conference with one of my favorite Nelson Mandela’s quotes, “You never lose.  You either win or learn.”

BOSTON, MA – 09/29/16 – Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, LLC announced today that Vitaly Veksler, the firm’s CEO and Portfolio Manager, will participate in the investment panel discussion at the Emerging Multinationals Conference 2016 organized by the Emerging Markets Institute at Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. The conference will take place in New York City on October 14.

Vitaly Veksler said, “It is an honor for me to participate in an emerging market conference organized by one of the world’s leading business schools. Conferences organized by Cornell University always attract thought leaders in their fields, no matter what these fields are. It is flattering that the conference’s organizers got interested in my firm’s country selection and rotation strategy. At Beyond Borders Investment Strategies, we use this strategy to manage equity portfolios that we build from exchange traded funds (ETFs) of countries where equity markets trade at significant discounts to their long-term averages. I look forward to a dialogue with the conference’s attendees and other speakers on this and other topics related to emerging market investing.”
